Aluminum (AL) Squares
Swivel tip models are recommended for use with aluminum squares to avoid leaving marks when clamping down extra hard.  

Cast Iron (FE) Squares
Cast iron is harder, so swivel vs round tips are more of a user preference. The round tips tend to be a little easier to maneuver into place with their smaller footprint, but swivel tips are handy if you work with softer materials.
